Hanging Laundry Inside

I love laundry. It starts out a wet, stinky, squished up mess and comes out fresh and clean. But I didn't really know the depths of my true love for laundry until I started hanging it outside. I leap out of bed in the morning when I know I have some ready to go out in to the sunshine. I'm not kidding.

But what about those other days? Days like it was here today, wet, cold, raining? When you know you are spending 60 cents for each load that you throw in the drier, you start to get creative. Here's my solution....

here you see an toddler bed turned on it's end. My daily average for laundry is about three loads a day, when my line gets full outside (or if the weather isn't cooperating), I start on the banister in the upstairs hallway and fill the toddler bed with all the little stuff like socks and baby clothes, it can hold a lot! This way, there is no waiting around to do the next load, I can dry it all at once.

Have one of these hanging around and not in use? Try it!

Great idea Jennifer! I will be on the lookout for one on Freecycle. I also LOVE hanging laundry out...I did it last summer for the first time. there is just something about it.
We have one of those fancy HE dryers, but I often need to put my clothes through 2 or even 3 cycles to get them dry...now talk about how much money could be saved there....
Thanks for the great idea~

Jennifer,
You are so ingenuous. I absolutely LOVE to hang my clothes outside. The smell when they are dried, is heavenly, to me. I just wish I could hang them out more. I only have 3 small clothes racks and no real place to put a clothes line.
For people who live in ares with HOA that won't allow clothes lines. I would say to them, I am going green and trying to shrink my carbon foot print. See what kind of reaction you get from them then. :)

I just can't relate. Laundry is one of my hardest household chores to enjoy. It is an attitude that has truly improved and I'm thankful that I have laundry to do, but sometimes I still struggle. I think it's my least favorite because I like to start and finish something in one stop. With laundry, you start, come back, start, come back...

Hanging laundry outside is not a good option around here. Besides our HOA, it isn't good for all our allergies. I hate to say it, but I prefer the laundry from the dryer. It's much softer than air drying and we don't use fabric softener (again because of allergies.)

I also love line dried laundry. I love waking up in the morning in line dried sheets that smell so fresh (this only happens on a Saturday!). We have radiator central heating so when I can't hang outside I put the clothes on the radiators and the whole house smells of my fabric conditioner for a while. I do use my tumble dryer for socks and things that I'm not too bothered about because it tends to shrink things.
To Rachel with allergies - Have you tried using white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner? It keeps the softness, lots of people use it on cloth nappies.
When I'm at the park with my boys people look at them (usually covered in dirt after 5 minutes outside) and say things like 'I don't envy your laundry'. I say 'it's Ok , I have an automatic washing machine!' They usually look a bit bemused but I'm grateful that I don't have to handwash everything or go to the stream and scrub it. Pop it in the machine add soap flakes, borax, soda crystals , fabric conditioner and an hour later it's ready to hang wherever I want a nice smell. I love it too. Sorry this has been long-I didn't realize how passionate I was about Laundry until I started this.

I have been looking for ways to work around the rules in our neighborhood for hanging laundry outside. My newest idea is to hang it on racks on my deck.

I have never hung laundry outside but it is something I am going to try to do this summer here in Montana. First I have to figure out how to build (get my husband to build)an outdoor laundry hanging thingy. I may ease into this with something in the house first. Thanks for the ideas!
