Applepalooza

Yesterday we finally got a chance to work on the two boxes of apples that have been on our back porch for a couple of weeks. We were peeling, coring,

eating,

canning,

and drying.

My daughter made two d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s apple pies. Check Sissy's post on those perfect pies.

What fun! How do you like your food dehydrator? I think I want to get one but don't know what to look for in one.
Can you give me any pointer? Are you happy with yours? Are they expensive?

Blessings,
Georgiann

Georgiann,

I got my first food dehydrator from my mom. She bought it and kept it for years without using it. That's the one in the picture. I've bought another since, it's really similar to the first one. I picked it up at a thrift store last year for about $5. I like having 2 because when the fruit is ripe it needs to be dehydrated right then! I've seen some that are more enclosed and, if I were buying new, I'd go for one of those because if you've got a lot of ripe fruit (like pears) you'll have fruit flies.

I do suggest getting one, they are VERY handy. If I have anything that has a chance of going bad before I can use it, I just dry it. Apples, pears, bananas, vegetables from the garden, herbs, anything. It saves $ in the long run. Be on the look out at yard sales, etc.

My husband bought me one a couple of years ago for Christmas. We use it for more than dehydrating. I can put my bread to raise in it. I just put it on 120 degrees and it raises very nicely, especially in the cold winter months. I do use it for dehydrating to, we really enjoy banana chips, so we will buy two bunches at Costco almost every week, dehydrate them, put some in quart jars and the rest into food saver bags for camping or whatever. My dehydrator is one of the bigger ones, but still fits on the counter. We can take all nine of the shelves out of it and put our bowl for bread in it. I don't know what I did without one:)
